Oysterquartz
In 1977 Rolex launched the Oysterquartz line in the Datejust and Day-Date models. With their solid Oyster cases and matching integral bracelets in gold or a combination of gold and stainless steel, the watches offered just the right blend of dressy and sporty, without going overboard in either direction.
You could comfortably wear them for a dressy or casual occasion. The Oysterquartz is the only quartz powered Rolex in the Oyster series. Rolex only produced this model for men. The History of the Oysterquartz.
The Rolex Oysterquartz
The Rolex Oysterquartz is unique to the Rolex brand. Featuring a quartz movement instead of the traditional mechanical movement that Rolex is famous for, the Oysterquartz represents a break from the norm for the fabled watch maker. As demand increased for quartz movement in the nineteen seventies Rolex decided to get into the quartz movement game and lend the style and craftsmanship of Rolex to the new trend in wrist watches.
The Rolex Oysterquartz can be found in the Datejust and in the Day Date models, the Oysterquartz may be equipped with 10 round cut diamonds giving the timepiece an elegant look. The Rolex Quartz Date was the first of Rolex’s watches to feature the now popular sapphire crystal, and was the precursor to the Oysterquartz, which debuted in nineteen seventy seven. The Rolex Oysterquartz features a caliber 5055, 11 jewel chronometer movement, a movement oscillating frequency of thirty two thousand seven hundred and sixty eight Hz, and a slimmer Oyster case. You can find the Oysterquartz with a matching bracelet in gold or with a combination of gold and steel, giving the timepiece a sporty look without sacrificing the classic style and elegance of Rolex.
The Rolex brand was not satisfied with the simple electronic movements that were being developed by other watch makers and spent a great deal of time and energy perfecting a quartz movement that was suitable to carry the Rolex name. Only manufactured for men the Oysterquartz is special in the Rolex line. Rolex only made about twenty five thousand of them and ceased production on the Oysterqaurtz in 2001, so it can be difficult to find one now. The Rolex Oysterquatrz is not the most popular watch in the Rolex family but it is one of the rarest. So if you are looking for a unique and interesting Rolex then the Oysterquartz may be just what you need.
